Teaching Literacy – phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency

Program Overview
As teachers, we want to turn our vision of every child reading fluently into reality – but how do we do this? This hands-on seminar focuses on strategies to improve phonemic awareness, phonics teaching, fluency and comprehension. Phonics teaching should not be tedious. In this one day seminar participants will find out how reading instruction can be efficient, fun and successful. Learn about our alphabetic code so that you can teach it with confidence. Maureen and Helen will also discuss literacy research and what this means for classroom practice.
Presenter
Maureen Pollard is a teacher, literacy consultant and publisher. Her publications include the Little Learners Love Literacy series, SoundCheck, Making Words and the Sylvester Syllable Game. She has helped many schools develop literacy programs which include phonemic awareness and phonics in a language rich environment. Her passion is to ensure that children are taught literacy skills in a fun, focused, fast paced teaching style.
Helen Kirkland is convenor of Education Support at Tintern Girls Junior School. Her broad experience in both secondary and primary schools gives her a deep understanding of practical approaches to teaching literacy skills in the early years.

Dates: Thursday 11th March, Thursday 17th June and Thursday 9th September.
Time: 9.00am Registration / 9.30am – 3.30pm Workshop
Parking: As the parking in the area is mainly 2 hour it is advisable for participants to use public transport. ACER is a 5 minute walk from trams and trains. There is all day parking at the The Well. Centre access from Harold Street for $8.00 per day.

Multi Sensory Literacy for the Early Years

Program Overview
Teaching literacy skills in an explicit and fun way provides an ideal start to school. The first year of school is vital to future success. In this session Maureen will discuss a multi-sensory approach to learning literacy for children 4 – 6 years. The teacher is always the best resource in any school so learn how your skills can enhance this evidence-based program increase students abilities to read, write and spell with confidence. During this practical seminar Maureen will demonstrate phonemic awareness strategies woven into every aspect of the program.
