Finally we have published a simple and fun activity to help
children move from sounds to words. Spelling is a major
concern for many children and it is crucial that they are
taught explicitly how sounds and letters work together to
make words. Just like kicking a football or playing the piano,
practice is the best way to master a skill.
Once children know a few letter-sound relationships,
including a vowel, support them to take the next step -
blending sounds together make words.
Segmenting - breaking a word into sounds and blending -
putting sounds together to make a word can be difficult skills
for literacy learners. Spelling and reading are complementary
skills and need to be taught as such.
Using our NEW MAKING WORDS laminated placemat
takes away the stress to be perfect. Most importantly, it eases
the demands on memory by giving children a menu of letter
choices. Children make a series of critical choices, circling the
letters, capturing the sounds and freezing them in sequence
in one quick sweep.
The teaching guide includes step-by-step instructions plus
more than a hundred words grouped by vowel sound, -ck
ending, and ss, ff, ll. It is fun and easy to use over and over
again.
