Issue #52 - October 2007
Welcome to our October Enews! Welcome to our ‘new look’ Enews. It still contains all our regular features that keep you in touch with literacy teaching and learning.

After much research we have developed a simple and fun activity to help children move from sounds to words. Both teachers and parents will love this laminated Making Words placemat with a step-by-step guide with hundreds of words to use.

All parents want to raise happy, cooperative, responsible children. In 2008 join us for a Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program; an 8 week course to take the anxiety out of parenting and replace it with confidence, effectiveness and most importantly enjoyment.

Happy reading,
NEW Making Words Placemat Finally we have published a simple and fun activity to help children move from sounds to words. Spelling is a major concern for many children and it is crucial that they are taught explicitly how sounds and letters work together to make words. Just like kicking a football or playing the piano, practice is the best way to master a skill.

Once children know a few letter-sound relationships, including a vowel, support them to take the next step - blending sounds together make words.

Segmenting - breaking a word into sounds and blending -putting sounds together to make a word can be difficult skills for literacy learners. Spelling and reading are complementary skills and need to be taught as such.

Using our new Making Words laminated placemat takes away the stress to be perfect. Most importantly, it eases the demands on memory by giving children a menu of letter choices. Children make a series of critical choices, circling the letters, capturing the sounds and freezing them in sequence in one quick sweep.

The teaching guide includes step-by-step instructions plus more than a hundred words grouped by vowel sound, -ck ending, and ss, ff, ll. It is fun and easy to use over and over again.

Little Learners Love Literacy™ - creating stimulating literacy learning environments

We are very committed and passionate about our Little Learners Love Literacy sessions.  Our Little Learners starting school next year will be well prepared to enjoy and participate in literacy activities in any classroom.  The purpose of our classes is to have confident learners who are familiar with alphabet sounds, making words and writing.  I am presently writing little books for children to read to practise their literacy skills.  These books will consolidate the skills and strategies we have been teaching throughout the year.  It sounds serious; but we are serious about how and what we do!

For this reason we are clear that it is preferable for a child to start our Little Learners Love Literacy™ sessions at the beginning of the year.  We do not accept enrolment for Term 4 if the class started in February.  It is unfair on the child.

ABC
Land
is starting a new class on Friday

morning at the Sunbury Aquatic Centre. Please contact Allison Webb on 9740 7122 for more details.  Allison has purchased the licence to use our Little Learners Love Literacy™ curriculum.  If your child is going to school next year, make the most of this opportunity to give him a great start to school.

During the next few weeks we are finalizing our venues for 2008.  Please email us if you wish to be contacted with further information re times and days. Also, we are always on the look-out for good venues; please let us know if you can help us locate one.  If your school has a room that is available one morning a week, we would love to hear from you.

Secret
Parents' Business :          Encouragement versus Praise

I know I have talked about this previously in my Enews but I believe its importance in teaching and parenting can not be over emphasized.

Encouragement is often misunderstood.  It is very different to praise.  It is far more powerful.  It literally means to give a child the courage to succeed; it is your belief in their ability to succeed in any situation that they put their mind to.  Encouragement is a continuous process.  Praise is about control while encouragement is about influence and building self-esteem.

The language of encouragement focuses on the process rather than the result.  For example,

‘I know you can do it.  Just keep it up.’

‘It is great to see that you love riding your bike.’

‘I really appreciate your help.’

‘You are really improving your writing.  Well done!’

‘You really worked hard on that!’

‘Thanks.  That helped me so much.’
