Research keeps reminding us that children need strong phonological
skills in order to read and spell with ease. Many of the present literacy curriculums
concentrate on reading but 'spelling' skills are sadly neglected. By combining
phonological skills with the alphabet, spelling can be taught explicitly and effectively.
Learning Logic specializes in practical literacy strategies that translate into
resources. We have just released a phonological activity called Tapping
Syllables and the feedback from teachers and parents is fantastic We
know that children need to be able to break words into syllables when they are
learning to read and spell multi-syllabic words in higher grades, but this skill
needs to be taught and practiced in the Early Years so that foundation is firm.
Tapping Syllables helps children of all ages
to isolate syllables easily Children touch a hand just as if they were clapping,
as they say the syllable. It is a double-sided A4 card with ideas for to use with
children.
Let's
have a go
.. start with a compound word, foot
ball.(2 beats or syllables) Children touch a hand or finger as they
say each syllable. Then another two syllable word: but
ter
remember to touch each hand as you say the two-syllable
word. Let's try hip po po ta mus. How many
syllables? How many taps? What about hos pi tal
: a very tricky three-syllable word. Parents of young children
who have difficulty in pronouncing some multi-syllabic words will enjoy using
'tapping syllables' to isolate the syllables and help articulation. Tapping
Syllables comes with an ideas sheet to assist you to use it effectively.
It can be used with the Sylvester's Syllable Game and SoundCheck 2. Tapping
Syllables can be purchased individually, as a class set, or in the
Resource Pack (saving of $12).

A teacher from St Patrick's, Murrumbeena at our recent Phonological
Awareness Seminar devised this rhyme for us: Syllabification
helps me to spell When I tap out the words, I do it really well! |
